Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now…

  • Today was my last day of vacation.. back at it tomorrow.. starting with a staff meeting
  • It was really nice to go outside and play in the snow with my family
  • I’m getting really tired of my back problems, because they prohibit me from playing with Seth for a long time.
  • I wonder if my doctor is going to do anything more for my back…
  • Getting excited for our video game night tomorrow at the church with all my students.. DJ Hero is going to be awesome!
  • I had a really good Christmas with Jen and Seth
  • It was weird not going to anyone’s house this year.. family or friend, for Christmas.. it was our first year in 5 years of marriage.
  • Because of this site I’ve become incredible judgmental everytime I go to Wal-Mart.. and for the time being.. I’m ok with that..
  • I’m not excited that Apple is releasing a Tablet.. I would much prefer a NetBook.. but alas.. I can’t get everything I want..
  • I’m excited to go to Belleville tomorrow.. after my staff meeting and physio appointment, I’m going to go shopping and spend my gift cards I got for Christmas.
  • I realized this week how much smart asses bug me.. I got really irritated in a conversation with a kid this week
  • I’m really excited for my new glasses to arrive this week (I hope).. #1 so I can see and #2 so I can see if the website I ordered them from.. for $8 is actually good..
  • I’m excited to see what this week is going to bring for our New Orleans trip.. we have 23 seats left, and the early bird price deal-line is Jan 1.. either its going to be a super busy week.. or, those last 23 people are going to be paying extra money.
  • I decided this week that I’m going to start doing more photography.. not just the stuff for money.. but more stuff for me too..
  • Had Seafood Chowder for supper tonight.. it was awesome.. so thankful for family who brings up Atlantic lobster and scallops and stuff for us when they visit.. and yay that it is safe to freeze!
  • The stress of having only 1 car is really starting to rain on us.. but, we cannot even remotely afford a second one, so, we will just have to make due.
  • Jennifer started taking down the Christmas decorations today.. which shocked me.. because she usually waits until the new year… but.. there are still a few things up..
  • I love boxed turkey!!
  • It’s time to start saving money for a new mattress.. we’ve been sleeping on an air mattress for the past 4 months.. and while its better for my back than the mattress that we had.. its still not great.. and its hurting Jens back too.
  • It’s also time to start fundraising for my Africa trip in May.. If you want to donate, let me know

I cannot take credit for the Manic Monday Minute.. I got the idea from Terrance Crawford

Whats On My Playlist #5

I haven’t been doing a great job of keeping this up to date these past couple months.. but, here is my latest WOMP.. its in no order.. just a random mash up of the top cd’s I’ve been listening to this month.

Whats On My Playlist

I Saw Jesus Shooting Santa Clause

Thanks Gary Durbin for showing this video..

We aren’t doing Santa Clause here at the Burke house.. because we don’t want to be a part of the “gimmie, gimmie, gimmies” of Christmas, AND because we want our kids to know what Christmas is really about.. but.. this guy takes it to a crazy level.

Please note: We will still talk about St. Nick at our house, and tell Seth about what he did.. we just aren’t going to tell him that a fat guy in a red suit brings him gifts on Christmas eve with flying reindeer and all that jazz.

Lincoln Brewster, Jamming it Out!

This is just awesome…

The Way We Communicate

Yesterday I was walking through the halls at the highschool, on my way to bible study, when I saw a guy a girl (clearly bf and gf) walking down the hall towards me, holding hands.. a pretty common scene to see in a high school.. but the thing that threw me off was, they were both wearing headphones, listening to music.

It made me remember a time a couple years ago, when I had a bunch of students over at my house.  We were sitting in my living room playing video games, we were hanging out together, having fun.  Then at one point, I stopped what I was doing, and looked around the room at the mass of students who were in my house, and noticed something, no one was talking.  In fact, no one was really communicating at all.  I only had 3 controllers for my PS2, so 3 people were playing the game, 2 of the 3 had headphones in their ears, with the music blaringly loud, then as i looked around the rest of the room, 2 students were on my computer, one was sitting on the couch on my laptop, and another one was sitting at the table, just sitting there.

This caused me to think about the way we communicate.  When I was a kid, even as a teenager, when you hung out with friends, you usually sat around the living room and talked about things like your week, what you were doing on the weekend, you talked.. that was the point.  But, we had a big group of students sitting in my house, they would all say that “we were all hanging out together” but yet there was not one word being spoken, and in fact no one was even paying attention to the others.. they were really in their own world, for those playing the video game, it was more like they were playing against the computer, because they weren’t talking with each other.. no one poking fun at the other, no one talking smack.. and for those around the rest of the room, they were in their own world, with music on so loud that even if I did try to speak to them, they wouldn’t have heard me.

What happened? When did we become so independent that we don’t even talk to our friends? When did “hanging out” become merely a group of people just sitting in a room with each other?
