UPDATE: This appears to have stopped working. I will update if I find a way around it.
This summer one of the big announcements to the music world was that Spotify was finally coming to USA.. great.. if you live in USA.. what about us Canadians, why do we always get the shaft on these awesome things?
The truth is, you can get spotify if you live in Canada, and presumably other countries that don’t currently have it! This is done in a very similar way to getting Pandora Radio to work in Canada
The first step is to download Hotspot Shield which is a free tool that will hide your IP address from websites. Once you’ve downloaded hotspot shield, turn it on! Once it’s connected (indicated by the icon turning Green) direct your browser to http://spotify.com/ and click Sign Up… since the website can’t read your true (Canadian) IP address, it won’t give you that pesky ”not available” error.. fill out the sign up form, and soon you will receive an email saying “you’re in”. My access email took about a week to arrive, I don’t know if this is normal, but thats what it took.
Once you get that email, activate your account, download spotify application and you’re good to go. You don’t need to turn on HotSpot Shield every time you use it, once you are signed up, you’re good to go.. it no longer searches for your IP address.
Voila! That’s all there is to it! I presume if you have a paid account, you can use the mobile app without a VPN as well.. but I’m cheap and did the free version.. besides when I’m on my iPhone, I have Pandora
