More on Universal Power, and Other Energy Scams

Now for those who read my blog often, you’re probably saying “oh, what is he saying NOW about these guys” if this is your first time stumbling onto my blog, check out my previous posts on my dealings with Universal, and how I got out of the scam, FOR FREE.

My universal posts are getting some big hits, and my posting of the CBC segment about them is getting some decent hits as well, and a LOT of comments.

Just this past week, someone stumbled on the videos I posted, and they wrote me an email, explaining how they are sorry for me falling into this scam, and explained that they use to work for a company just like universal.

I then decided to get this guy to write me another email, all about his experience with them..  this is what he sent: (note: I know there will be someone from Universal who will comment on this saying “this guy worked for Summitt, and they are a scam, but Universal is not like Summit” to the person who is going to do that, save it.. energy resellers are all the same)

I worked for Summitt Energy and they’re entire operation is a scam. My first day working for this “company” They hand you a script and ask you not to stray to far from it or you won’t get any signatures.

The Universal Energy Saga Continues

Well I thought I was done with them, and in many ways I am.. but now, that I’ve moved into a house.. guess what.. they are coming to my door again.. just yesterday I had them come 3 times.. thats right.. THREE TIMES.. 3 different guys, and 3 separate times.. I tore them each a new one though.

They didn’t even try to act in a professional manner.. mind you they were wearing proper UE clothing this time, and not Hydro One… one of the guys stood on my step listening to me talk to him about how much money I lost.. mid way through a sentance, what does he do… “hawks a loogie”… it was disgusting, and not even a slight bit professional…

They gave me the same old talk, the same things they told me on the phone, about how I would have to be on the contract for a few years before I noticed the savings.. I told them to take a hike, and told them that I would be notifying people in Centre Hastings that they are around again and not to fall into the scam.. they laughed and walked away.

Universal Power Scam Update!

I’ve sent letters off to my MP and my MPP, I’ve filed 2 complaints with the Ontario Energy Board. 2 weeks, I received a call from Universal stating “we have reviewed your affirmation phone call and your signed contract, and we have decided your contract is legit, so if you want out, you will have to pay the cancellation fee.

I told them, I still haven’t received my copies of the phone call or contract, so I can verify for myself that it is legit. They still haven’t sent them. Last week, I received the same phone call “we’ve received your complaint with the OEB and have reviewed your account and it is legit, so if you want out, you will have to pay the cancellation fee.”

Today I received a call from Universal, say THE SAME THING “we’ve received your complaint with the OEB and have reviewed your account and it is legit, so if you want out, you will have to pay the cancellation fee.” I stated that this was the THIRD time I’ve received this call, I understand what they are saying, but I still haven’t received my copy of the phone call and signed contract to verify it for myself. They apologized, said it was being sent and I hung up.

2 hours later, I receive a phone call from the supervisor of the lady who called me earlier today and he apologized for all the confusion and said “we have reviewed your account and have decided that we will let you out of your contract, without the cancellation fee, as a good gesture.”

I guess persistence is the key to this company. I called them at least 2-3 times a week, for the past 4 weeks, wrote letters and filed complaints, and it got me out, without having to go about it in a “not so honest manner”

Hopefully my journey with Universal will help you with your dealings. Good luck to all those out there working on getting out of this scam.

Dealing With The Universal Energy Scam (Part 1)

For this past week I have been doing some serious research on a scam that I have gotten sucked into, without realizing it.

Back in December of 2007 I had a guy with a Hydro One Badge come to my door, and tell me that their payment plans would be changing soon, and they wanted to make sure that I was getting the best rates possible from them. Seeing his badge, I figure, seems legit to me, I will listen to his speel. He told me about how hydro costs would be going up soon, and that they wanted to make sure we we getting the lowest rate possible, and all I would have to do is sign this contract and we wouldn’t be affected by the rate increases.

This sounded legit to me, as he was wearing a hydro one badge, and told me he worked for hydro one, so I signed on the dotted line. Within a few days, I discovered that I had been duped… This guy didn’t really work for hydro one, he worked for Universal Power. So I immediatly called, and told them I wasn’t impressed with this practice, and wanted them to cancel my service with them, the staff member I spoke with assured me that, if I sent them a letter, and didn’t cash the “sign on check” that they gave me, then they could cancel my service.
